Healthy Media: Curating a Christ-Centered Media Diet

In a world saturated with media, the Saviour calls us to flee the distractions of Babylon—worldly TV, news, and entertainment that cloud our discipleship and pull us from His truth. Revelation 18:4 (KJV) warns, “And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.” The media we consume shapes our thoughts, values, and faith, making it critical to choose wisely. By purging toxic media and curating a diet that uplifts the soul, we sharpen our focus on Christ and counter the adversary’s schemes. So important is the pursuit of healthy media, sharing lessons from my journey of media detox and offering practical steps to align your consumption with the full Gospel.

The Dangers of Worldly Media

Media is a powerful force, capable of informing, entertaining, or ensnaring. Much of modern media—sensational news, mindless TV shows, and entertainment glorifying sin—acts as Babylon’s siren call, luring us away from Christ. It bombards us with messages that normalize pride, lust, and materialism, subtly eroding our faith. For years, I consumed this media without question, unaware of how it dulled my spiritual senses and crowded out God’s voice. Psalm 101:3 (KJV) declares, “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes.” Worldly media, though often disguised as harmless, can bind us to sin if left unchecked.

Our adversaries wield media as a weapon, using it to sow discord, distraction, and despair. News fuels fear and division, entertainment glorifies rebellion, and social media breeds comparison and vanity. These are not neutral forces but deliberate tools to pull us from discipleship. 1 John 2:15 (KJV) warns, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” To live for Christ, we must break free from media that binds us to Babylon and embrace a diet that strengthens our faith.

My Journey to Healthy Media

Recognizing media’s hold on my life, I took a radical step: I purged it all. For years, I eliminated TV, news, and entertainment, focusing solely on Scripture to renew my mind. This detox was transformative, stripping away the noise and revealing how deeply worldly media had shaped my thoughts. Romans 12:2 (KJV) became my guide: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Scripture filled the void, sharpening my discernment and drawing me closer to Christ.

After this season, I slowly reintroduced media, but with strict discernment. I chose classical music to inspire peace, faith-based cinema to reinforce Gospel values, and quality literature to broaden my perspective while honoring God. This curated approach allowed me to engage the world with new eyes, seeing it through the lens of Christ’s truth. Healthy media became a tool to lift my soul, not a chain to bind it. My journey proves that anyone can master their media consumption through discipline, repentance, and a commitment to the full Gospel.

Curating a Christ-Centered Media Diet

Healthy media is not about total abstinence but intentional selection—choosing content that aligns with God’s truth and strengthens discipleship. It requires discernment to filter out Babylon’s distractions and courage to prioritize what glorifies Christ. Philippians 4:8 (KJV) offers a timeless standard: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” By applying this filter, we create a media diet that sharpens faith and honors God.

Here are practical steps to begin today:

  1. Cut One Hour of TV: Reduce your consumption of worldly TV—shows that glorify sin or waste time—and replace it with something uplifting. Psalm 90:12 (KJV) urges, “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Redeem your time for Christ.

  2. Read Psalm 119: Study Psalm 119, which celebrates the transformative power of God’s Word. Its 176 verses remind us that Scripture is the ultimate source of truth, far surpassing worldly media. Psalm 119:105 (KJV) declares, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

  3. Explore a Christian Film: Watch a faith-based film that reinforces Gospel values, such as The Passion of the Christ or Courageous. These stories inspire and align with Christ’s teachings, unlike much of Hollywood’s output. Colossians 3:2 (KJV) advises, “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”

  4. Repent of Mindless Consumption: Confess times when you’ve consumed media without discernment, allowing it to shape your thoughts or distract from God. 1 John 1:9 (KJV) promises, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Repentance clears the way for wise choices.

  5. Curate Uplifting Content: Build a media diet of classical music, quality literature, and faith-based resources. For example, listen to Bach’s sacred works, read C.S. Lewis’s Mere Christianity, or follow a Christian podcast. These choices lift the soul and draw you closer to Christ.

Countering the Adversary’s Schemes

Our adversaries use media to bind us to Babylon, flooding our minds with noise that drowns out God’s voice. They promote content that stirs fear, lust, or pride, knowing that a distracted disciple is a weakened one. But we are not defenseless. By exercising discernment, we counter their schemes, choosing media that aligns with the full Gospel. 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV) instructs, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” Discernment, rooted in Scripture, empowers us to reject harmful media and embrace what edifies.

This requires vigilance. Even seemingly neutral content—news or entertainment—can subtly shift our focus from Christ. For example, constant news consumption can breed anxiety, while binge-watching shows can dull spiritual sensitivity. By curating a healthy media diet, we reclaim our minds, ensuring that what we consume glorifies God and strengthens our faith.

The Reward of Healthy Media

A Christ-centered media diet transforms how we see the world. It sharpens our faith, deepens our discernment, and draws us closer to Jesus. By prioritizing Scripture, faith-based films, and uplifting content, we fill our minds with truth, beauty, and virtue, as Philippians 4:8 commands. This shift brings peace, replacing the chaos of worldly media with the calm of God’s presence. John 16:33 (KJV) assures, “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” Healthy media anchors us in Christ’s victory.

This discipline also strengthens our witness. When we choose media that honors God, our conversations, decisions, and actions reflect His light, inspiring others to seek Him. A mind fed by healthy media is a mind equipped to live the abundant life Christ promises (John 10:10), free from Babylon’s chains.
